Benghazi Revisited: A story in five acts
by James Corbett

Act One: The Story Begins
On the night of September 11, 2012, up to 150 militants armed with AK-47s, assault rifles, RPGs, grenades, machine guns and gun trucks with mounted artillery stormed the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya. Over the course of the next several hours, they attacked and overran the compound, battering down the gates, storming the main building and setting it on fire, and attacking US and Libyan forces that attempted to rescue the trapped diplomatic officials. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and two others hid in the building's “safe haven” but were quickly overcome by smoke from the fires.  A reaction force from the CIA annex arrived on the scene, managing to rescue the body of one of those who had been stuck with Stevens in the main building, but not finding Stevens' body itself. Later that evening, Stevens body was found by Libyans who had arrived on the scene at the compound and he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead of asphyxiation from smoke inhalation. Stevens was the first U.S. Ambassador to die on duty since the airplane crash that killed Arnold L. Raphel in Pakistan in 1988.
Act Two: The Story is Spun
Within days, a number of U.S. officials, including UN Ambassador Susan Rice, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and President Obama himself, all tied the attack to a separate series of protests that had taken place in Cairo, Egypt that same day, allegedly in response to an obscure online anti-Islamic video. The video had languished online for months in total obscurity before suddenly (allegedly) becoming the focus of the Egyptian protests, and the media dutifully went along with this story.
According to this narrative, Muslims suddenly (and inexplicably) became incensed by this months-old internet video all at the same time, resulting in a wave of protests, demonstrations and riots that swept across the Muslim world. The attack on the compound in Benghazi was a spontaneous outgrowth of this spontaneous protest movement, and there was nothing that could have been done to predict, prevent or stop it.
Act Three: The Story Unravels
Over the course of the next several weeks it gradually begins to become clear that—just like every other spectacular terrorist incident in this age of terror—just about every single piece of the administration's official narrative of the attack is completely wrong.
There were no protests in Benghazi prior to the attack and no indication that anyone was even aware of (let alone enraged by) the obscure anti-Islamic video that had been blamed for inciting the violence. A Libyan guard who was hurt in the attack was later quoted as saying that “there wasn't a single ant outside” the compound before the attack began.
The fighters that stormed the compound were not a ragtag band of protesters, as initial reports seemed to indicate, but a heavily armed, coordinated team of militants who seemed to know precisely what they were doing.
The attack had not been an out-of-the-blue, unpredictable event, but only the latest in a string of increasingly brazen attacks on diplomatic officials in the country.
In other words, the officials who had gone before the American public and attempted to paint a picture of the events in Benghazi as just another incidence of hysterical Muslim overreaction to an online video were completely wrong. The only question was whether they were simply making the whole narrative up as a convenient narrative to sell to a credulous public, or whether they were deliberately lying.
Act Four: The Story is Counter-spun
Suddenly, the Benghazi attack and its aftermath became a key issue in the 2012 Presidential election campaign. What did Obama, Clinton, Rice et. al. know about the attacks and when did they know it? Was there a deliberate attempt to cover up the administration's gross incompetence? Was the administration trying to obscure the “real threat” to America: radical Islamic terrorists?
The story had all the earmarks of a War on Terror tragedy: The administration had either failed to receive or failed to acknowledge repeated requests for increased security on the ground. They had failed to send in military forces when the compound was confirmed to be under attack. They had made up a story about protests and an online video when they had known presumably from the beginning that this had been a coordinated and pre-planned attack.
For the neocons and Romney supporters, this was manna from heaven. The story virtually wrote itself. America had been attacked because Obama was soft on terror. Worse, the entire Obama administration shied away from even using the word terror to identify the culprits. Clearly, this was yet another sign that those darn Democrats had failed to learn the lessons of September 11th and this is why America had to put another Republican in the White House in November.
Everyone from 9/11 suspect Porter Goss to the usual gaggle of “ex”-Pentagon officials and CIA agents were trotted out to make this very case, and Faux News did its level best to “expose” the “truth” about the Benghazi raid in detailed investigative reports that it was suddenly inspired to release weeks ahead of the election.
Act Five: The Story Concludes (?)
The November elections came and Obama was re-elected. Senate committee hearings on what happened in Benghazi proceed, but there is little interest in the story anymore. Even the fact that disgraced CIA chief Petraeus—who was originally going to skip out on the hearings altogether in the wake of his sordid sex scandal and sudden resignation—ended up directly contradicting his original testimony, admitting that the event was a coordinated terrorist attack and not a spontaneous protest against a video, barely made headlines in the press. After all, the political game was over, most of the politicians involved were resigning, and there was little left at stake in the scandal.
Now the hearings are continuing. This week saw Hillary Clinton delivering testimony after weeks of postponement due to a head injury. Many a headline was generated from her “feisty” tone and Rand Paul's “attack” on her over the Benghazi raid. Soon the hearings will conclude, a report will be issued updating security protocols at American embassies worldwide, some wishy-washy language will be used to exonerate all those involved, and the whole incident will be consigned to the dustbin of history. The end.
Meanwhile, back in reality...
That is the political theater that has played itself out around the Benghazi attack, at any rate. Meanwhile, back in reality, a series of troubling questions remain about what really happened that night, and what is really being covered up. Questions such as:
As it has been openly admitted since November 1st that the Benghazi embassy “was at its heart a CIA operation,” what precisely was the CIA's role there? Was the compound attacked because of a secret CIA prison that was being operated there as Paula Broadwell alleged shortly before finding herself at the center of the Petraeus scandal? Was Stevens et. al. involved in gun running for the terrorists in Syria as other reports have indicated?
What of the Petraeus affair, which for a time looked like it was going to derail his testimony at the Benghazi hearings (which eventually happened behind closed doors)? Was it related to the series of takedowns of high-ranking military personnel that took place within weeks of the Benghazi fiasco? Was General Ham's “retirement” actually a firing for his defiance of stand down orders he received from the Pentagon that night, as alleged by an anonymous source in a Washington Times article last October? What about the abrupt removal of Rear Admiral Charles Gaouette from command of the John C. Stennis strike group shortly thereafter? Or former AFRICOM head Kip Ward's dressing down in the same time frame? Are these actions related?
What about the anti-Islamic video that provided the convenient scapegoat for the attack in those first few days? Where did the video really come from and who was behind it? Who owns the “NewsPoliticsNow” YouTube channel that helped bring the video to the world's attention, and is it related to Stanley, Inc., the same company that was implicated in the Obama passport record theft in 2008, as alleged by YouTube user Montagraph?
Sadly, there is a good chance that at this point we will never get a definitive answer to these questions. Now that the official hearings are underway, the only thing we can be sure of is that the Congress critters will not get to the bottom of what really happened on September 11, 2012.  Perhaps we can hope that one of the actors in this play will come forward with a deathbed confession some years hence, or that some whistleblower will leak some document that will shed new light on these baffling events, but by then the political discourse will have moved on and few will bother to remember the significance of the events at all. Such are the ways of the theater we call Washington. As the great bard said, the world is a stage and we are but players.

Global jobless to hit record 200 million this year: ILO
By Tom Miles
The global jobless queue will stretch to more than 200 million people this year, the International Labour Organization said in its annual report on Tuesday, repeating a warning it has made at the start of each of the last six years.
The U.N. jobs watchdog estimates unemployment will rise by 5.1 million this year to more than 202 million, and by another 3 million in 2014, following a rise of 4.2 million in 2012.
If those predictions are right, global unemployment will hit a record. But the ILO has revised its jobless figures down each year as the number of those giving up the job hunt altogether swells, meaning they are no longer classed as unemployed.
A Reuters analysis of previous ILO reports shows that estimates of unemployment made in each of the last six years have subsequently been cut. The original 2007 joblessness figure of 189.9 million is now put at 169.0 million - 11 percent lower.
Figures for 2008-2010 have also fallen by 10-15 million from the original estimates.
Most of the drop is due to people giving up looking for work, said Jose Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, head of director of labour market analysis at the Geneva-based ILO.
"These are people who, because of the seriousness of the crisis, because of long-term unemployment, have given up hope, have decided to not search for work any more, and therefore they are not counted as unemployed but more as discouraged," he said.
The ILO's revised figures mean global unemployment has risen by 28 million since 2007, before the start of the financial crisis, said ILO Director-General Guy Ryder.
With a further 39 million "discouraged" people withdrawing from the labour market over the same period, the crisis could be seen to have created a global jobs gap of 67 million, he said.
However, despite the greater number people believed to have given up on looking for work, the ILO's latest report did not revise figures given a year ago for the total number of people in the labour market.
The so-called "labour force participation rate", which measures the proportion of the working-age population who are working or looking for work, is thought to have remained steady at 64.1 percent for the past three years, showing no sign of the labour force shrinking.
The figure had been above 65 percent until 2007 but fell in each of the subsequent three years.

US MARKET

Awash In Cash
By Bob Rinear
As a market observer, one of my jobs is to "add things up". For instance in a particular company; if the sales haven't increased, but their costs have... we make the determination that their earnings will probably suffer. We simply added the liabilities and the assets and came up with a ratio. In a normal world, this works well.
But sometimes you have to scratch your head a bit and wonder just how on earth things are going as they are, simply because things don't appear to add up. Consider for a moment the unemployment rate. It is undeniably high, and yet somehow those folks appear to be spending like mad because for the most part retail sales aren't "horrid". Consider the food stamp program. Arguably you get food stamps because you've lost the ability to provide nutrition for your family because your income has fallen or become nonexistent. We now have some 47 million folks on these supplemental assistance programs. If we are a nation of 310 million folks, that means almost 16% of us, are so broke we need food stamps. Yet retail sales are not very far below sales pegged during the 2005 -06 highs, where because of the housing bubble, everyone had jobs. How does that add up?
Moving along, there seems to be some mathematical confusion when it comes to housing. There are still millions of houses in the "shadow system" where they've been foreclosed, or the owners stopped paying their mortgages but they still "squat" in the home for free. Yet according to the economists demand for housing is so hot, there's a shortage of homes to buy. Really? If you have millions sitting idle, hidden from balance sheets, how can there be a shortage?
But nowhere is the discrepancy between what "should be" and what "is" so wide as when you look at the equity markets. If you paid attention for the past two years an incredible amount of investor money has come out of the market over the past two years. We're talking almost 150 billion dollars. Yet the stocks simply worked their way higher and higher. If investors are taking money out of funds and parking in cash and bonds...how on earth can stocks move up? Good question.
One of the things that constantly amazes me is just how little the average person understands about what's going on behind the scenes. Because we live in the markets, we are joined at the hip with them, and soon enough we figure everyone should know what we know. But a quick conversation with anyone who doesn't follow economics or the market like we might, sheds light on the fact that they have no idea. This was brought home to me like a two by four to the head last week. I was visiting with a relative, and the topic of the market came up. She had heard the news telling folks that the market had been acting pretty well, and suggested that things must be pretty good.  I of course quickly took the other side of the argument and mentioned that there's no way the market could move up without Bernanke printing up some 85 billion a month and giving it to the primary dealer banks. Well, she looked at me like I had 3 heads.  Bernake's doing what? Why? How long has this been going on? Why do the banks need the money? What do the banks do with the money? Why don't they stop? And a hundred other questions.
She didn't know about the fact there's still hundreds of billions of worthless Mortgage backed securities. She didn't know there was still millions of foreclosed homes. She didn't know Bernanke was printing up 85 billion a month to relieve banks of these funky worthless mortgages. She didn't know that it was because of Bernanke that interest rates were basically 0, nor why they really wanted them there. She didn't know how he was buying Treasuries and doing the "twist" to keep rates low. There were so many things that you and I "know" that she didn't "know" that it dawned on me in a big way...."most folks are STILL completely in the dark". That shocked me a bit. I really thought with all the folks on the Internet now that the masses were finally catching on. Nope.
But even the folks that do understand what they might be told in a good newsletter, the real problem is that the issue goes way beyond what you are being told. A fairly well versed person might declare that Bernanke's buying up worthless assets from banks, and the banks are using that money to buy risk assets. Bravo. That's pretty good. But do you also know that behind the curtains, there's something so sinister as to make a Hollywood science fiction movie seem tame? Most don't. While many have heard the term derivatives and how there's a "whole lot of em" out there, few understand the ramifications of them. Fewer still understand the circle of rehypothecation they've created. The leverages they've created.
While discussing this with Trader Rob, he said it in one sentence as good as I could have attempted "double, triple, and x-ple of counting a single asset serving as deliverable collateral, and every single time purchasing riskier assets to generate a return on a return on a return of the original investment"  That's a perfect description of what's going on folks. You pledge a collateral. Then you borrow upon that collateral. Then, you take the assets you've gained from borrowing against the collateral and pledge those as collateral, so you can borrow more. Over and over, 20, 30, 40 times. Everything is fine as long as the Original asset isn't called out. As long as no "black swan" events hit. As long as no fat tail, out of the bell curve disaster shows up. But here's the problem...we know that somewhere out there the swan is warming up.
I've told you all too many times to count that this is the last "grab", the "get all you can while you can" period. They're printing all this money, they're grabbing all the risk they can with all this bogus borrowed money backed by nothing but repeated draws on the same collateral, so they can get all the returns they can before the bottom falls out. This is the most dangerous of "musical chairs". Round and round we go, borrowing and pledging, rehypothecating and reinvesting, always taking bigger and bigger risk profiles, because they're using "free" money. This is why the market can march on to new all time highs, while the economy slowly implodes. This is why companies can post record profits while unemployment is rampant and 1 in 5 families is on some form of assistance. This is why 160 billion can come OUT of mutual funds, but stocks go up anyway.
But make no mistake, because EVERYONE is in on this.  Look at the Debt ceiling talks. Now they're willing to just kick the can till May? No limits? Or take housing sales that are supposed to be so "red hot". In December they FELL. Ooops. Or how about this one. the Richmond Fed survey hit and they figured it would come in with a gain of  5. Well, instead it fell -12! No one cared, the market rose. Then the one that should have been on everyone's front page headlines, but didn't make as much as a mention on page 54... Egan Jones was the credit rating agency that had said that if the Dems and Rep's didn't come together on a solid debt plan they'd downgrade the US. Well guess what? The SEC had decided to "bar them from rating the US credit, and issuing downgrades". You read that right folks. If you threaten to downgrade the US, you're barred from issuing credit ratings. Do you think that's by accident? Coincidence??
This will end. I do NOT know when. Could be this afternoon, could be 3 years. Could be next Friday, could be 2014. No one knows. But there will come a point, just like at the top of the housing market, where something hits, someone gets nervous, some bizarro thing happens that has everyone once again scrambling to "get out before the next guy". And when that event hits, it's going to usher in something we've never seen before. The total lock down of the economic system.
Over the years, we’ve preached that the only thing that's going to get you past this is physically holding gold and silver. I still believe that simply because as I see what Governments around the world are doing, I see what looks like a return to a metal backed basket of currency being the new global reserve. Consider that Germany just decided to bring all it's gold back to the homeland. Consider that China has re upped its call for its citizens to own gold. Consider that Japan has now announced that it's tired of years and years of deflation and now is targeting a 2% inflation, which will take massive printing of their Central bank. The entire world is awash in liquidity folks, and for 5000 years the only offset to that has been gold and silver. Maybe the rules have changed. Maybe it will become an insignificant shiny metal. But I'd rather have faith in a metal found in the second page of the bible, rather than dollars that began in fiat just 40 years ago. Call me skeptical.
So, we watch the market move up seemingly not impressed that the world is bogged in derivative hell. We see the pundits calling for a wonderful recovery, and meanwhile Bernanke has to hand out 1.2 Trillion a year to keep the wheels from falling off. We hear of the Global recovery, while Europe bleeds jobs, and Japan cranks up the presses. Nothing adds up. The math is broken.
Here's my point folks. No matter how deep you think the rabbit hole is, I'm here to tell you it's much deeper than you know. While they've calmed the masses and deluded them into thinking all is fine, this reminds me very much of November 2007. Do you remember that time? The DOW had just put in an ALL TIME HIGH. I remember watching Cramer one evening and he was laughing saying, "I know it sounds crazy, but this market is going up, up, UP!!" and within two months it started its 6 thousand point crash.  This is the same thing. Remember Bernanke telling us in 2005 that he had absolutely no evidence of a housing bubble and real estate doesn't go down? Then housing lost 40 - 60% of all value as real estate crashed. The pundits today telling you that all is perfect the recovery is robust and the futures is bright echoes Bernanke and Cramer of years gone by.  Buy into the hype at your own peril. For me, I'll use their fiat dollars, to continue to buy the kings metals.
We've witnessed them run this market from 6600 to over 13,700. In doing so, unemployment rose, food stamps hit all time highs, disability hit new record highs, worker hours shrank, average pay stagnated. The math ONLY adds up if you add in the behind the scenes "stuff". The Bernanke money, the banks going leverage crazy. Use the knowledge folks. Understand the scam. Work the market to your advantage, but don't marry it. Understand that just as fast as fiat markets can rise, they can fall. But most important, understand that when the swan flies, when the fat tail event creeps out from under the bell jar, your opportunity to cash out of fiat dollars and buy gold or silver will be long gone. Be a Boy Scout, be prepared. Buy them when you still can. There’s going to be a point, when you can’t…they will have already soared to levels you couldn’t afford.

No, Israel Did Not Just Vote for the Center

No, Israel Did Not Just Vote for the Center: The surprisingly strong performance of Yair Lapid in Israel's election, coupled with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's losses, have led many to conclude that Israeli voters have shifted to the center. But Lapid's party is conservative where it counts—on security issues—and the voters who left Netanyahu largely went even further to the right.

Making Sense of Mali

Making Sense of Mali: pRecent reports have oversimplified the conflict in Mali, hinting that the country hosts a coherent Tuareg separatist bloc and a popular radical Islamist movement. In fact, mainstream Malians love neither. Most of them just want a return to democracy with broader participation and more freedoms -- the precise opposite of what they fear the separatists and Islamists would bring. As long as French assistance helps hold those groups off, it will be welcome./p
